    CPanel 11

Anyone here using CPanel 11 (or 10, doesn't matter) for their sites? I'm using CPanel 11 and recently I've been monitoring my "Awstats". How accurate is it esp. where calculating unique visitors is concerned?

Also, how is unique visitors calculated? Is it per day or per a certain number of hours?

    Thanks.

Awstats, and other Cpanel built-in analytics software (Webalizer, Analog) are very basic log analyzers, and in general very inaccurate. Specific functions such as geolocation (by that I mean origin of visitors), main referrers, entry pages, unique visitors etc are pretty much worthless. The only function that is very accurate is the number of hits, since it is directly pulled out of the site logs, which is pretty useless however because a single visit can mean 5 hits on one page and 20 on another.

I would advise using the free Google Analytics or if you want a paid one www.newbridgestats.com (disclosure, affiliate link ). Just try out one of those and you will see a difference

Coincidentally I just registered for Google Analytics the other day. So Google Analytics is pretty accurate is it?

I'll compare the results for both...

I wonder what "Hits" exactly means. The number of hits is even larger than that of page views ???

Anytime a file is downloaded from your server ("file" can be a picture, a css, a web page etc.) it is counted as a hit. So it is absolutely normal that the number of hits is superior than the number of page views...

Yes I think GA is one of the best out there, maybe not as complete as the commercial solutions available, but definitely enough for most webmasters.

LOL @ chinaseo...the day I get at least 500'000 unique visitors daily is the day I'll consider commercial solutions. ;D
